Philippines
The Phillipines are a large expanse of over 7,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean – 1,000 of which are inhabited.
In 1986 the 21 year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos was overthrown by popular support for his opponent Aquino. Later in 2001 the film-star turned president Estrada was also kicked out of office following accusations of corruption.
The Muslim minority in Mindanao seeks to set up an independent Islamic state in the south.
Youth Facts
Over half the population is under 15.
Answers to Prayer
There is increasing spiritual unity among evangelical churches in the Philippines.
300,000 prayer warriors in the Philippines have commited to praying for one hour every day for their nation!
Challenges for Prayer
There are Christians in key positions of leadership in the Philippine government. Pray that they would pursue justice and stand against the greed and corruption.
The Filipino Church is becoming a significant missionary-sending Church – with nearly 900 missionaries working in other countries. Pray that this vision would grow and that Filipino churches would continue to release and support people to go!
Over 5,000 people move to the capital Manila each to try to find a better life. Most start off having to live on one of the 1,000 squalid slums built on the city rubbish dumps. Most churches are only involved in wealthier parts of the city. Pray that churches will have a vision and passion to reach out to the poorest of the poor.
