When Peter stood before Annas and Caiaphas in Acts 4:12 and said,
“… there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”, he was doing more than simply proclaiming the gospel. He was drawing battle lines.
Years before, when Augustus consolidated his power and took his seat in Rome, a celebration was ordered called ‘Advent’ – an interesting choice of words. Heralds – again, an interesting word – were sent to the four corners of the empire proclaiming,
“There is none other name under heaven whereby men may be saved than the name of Augustus Caesar.”
That is the message of the gospel. No Lord But Christ. No Saviour but Jesus. No power but God.
