Missions – Malta

March 13, 2010 by David Trounce Leave a Comment

Malta
Throughout history the three islands of Malta have been occupied by competing nations wanting to take advantage of their strategic location in the Mediterranean – stretching between Europe and North Africa.
In 1964 Malta gained its independence from Britain and began to build links with the Arab world and the Soviet Union. Since then Maltese politics have swung evenly between left-wing socialists who want to distance themselves from Europe and nationalists who would like Malta to join the European Union.
The Catholic Church is the state church and discrimination against other religions has improved since 1990.
Challenges for Prayer
Catholic charismatic groups are growing all over the islands. Pray that their passion for evangelism would grow and they would stand strong in what they believe without compromising.
Many Protestant Christians still face social pressure, because for many being Maltese means you need to be a Catholic!
Many young people move abroad, often to Australia, Britain or the USA, to find work. Pray that in their new ‘home’ they would have the opportunity to hear about Jesus.
